Amherst Street (Kolkata)

Amherst Street is a north-south street in north Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal. The street was named after William Amherst, 1st Earl Amherst. It has been renamed as Raja Rammohan Roy Sarani after Raja Rammohan Roy. On the extreme south lies the Bank of India and on the extreme north lies Raja Rammohan Roy Memorial Museum. Several educational institutes including City College Main, Anandanohan College, Rammohan College, St Pauls College and School are located on the street. The popular and famous landmarks are Amherst Street Post Office or Raja Rammohan Sarani Post Office, Trinity Church, Union Bank of India, Shree Vishudhanad saraswati Marwari Hospital, popularly known as Marwari Hospital, Lawrence Day School, Bose's Clinical Laboratory, Shardhananda Park and Lady Dufferin Hospital. Some of the notable festivals that take place in and around the street include Chalta Bagan / Lohapatty Durga Puja, Somendra Nath Mitra's Kali Puja (Amherst Street Sarbojonin) and Jhamapukur Sarbojonin (Subal Chandra Lane) (Kali Puja)where the chief organiser is TMCP leader Tamoghna Ghosh. It is perpendicular to Mahatma Gandhi Road.

Amherst Street is situated at the heart of the city and adjacent to College Street and Manicktala.
